People who are considered morbidly obese can suffer from a variety of health problems directly due to their obesity. Losing excess body weight can drastically reduce these health threats. The most successful weight loss tactic for a person who is morbidly obese has been weight loss surgery. Surgeons define success after weight loss surgery as when a patient loses at least 50 percent of their excess weight two years after the operation. This can eliminate many health problems directly due to obesity. But even if a patient does not meet the surgical definition of success, there is still a benefit for the patient. Even a moderate amount of weight loss has been show to reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease, and can improve a person's joint pain, hypertension and high cholesterol. In addition, the improvement in a person's quality of life can be immeasurable. A person's self confidence and self image can increase, they can have higher energy levels and are more likely to be more socially active, to date and get married, have children, buy a house and get a promotion at work.
