Hepatitis Hepatitis Basics

Many people who have hepatitis are unaware they carry the virus

People who are infected with one of the many types of viral hepatitis may not know they are infected because they may not have any symptoms. Although people with some types of viral hepatitis develop flu-like symptoms in the acute phase, these symptoms usually go away by themselves in a short period of time. However, an acute infection can develop into a chronic infection that doesn't produce any symptoms. If left untreated, a chronic hepatitis infection may last a lifetime and can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer and liver failure.
