ANNOUNCER : As more and more people are shelling out cash to stop the clock - the front lines in the war against aging have expanded.

JOSEPH A. EVIATAR, MD, CHELSEA EYE & COSMETIC SURGERY ASSOCIATES : We've seen a huge increase over the last several years. The first reason is there are many more products available, that last longer, are more effective.

ANNOUNCER : Now you can do battle at BOTOX parties and even at the mall. But these are medical procedures that carry risks.

JOSEPH A. EVIATAR, MD, CHELSEA EYE & COSMETIC SURGERY ASSOCIATES : They are low risk, because most of them are reversible. But BOTOX, if injected improperly, can cause drooping of inappropriate areas. And the facial fillers, depending on the filler, they can cause different problems -- lumps, bumps, granulomas, things like that.

ANNOUNCER : The best way to minimize risk is to choose a doctor trained in facial anatomy.

JOSEPH A. EVIATAR, MD, CHELSEA EYE & COSMETIC SURGERY ASSOCIATES : For example, oculoplastic surgeons, dermatologists, facial plastic surgeons. But I think more important than just the type of physician doing it is their level of experience. Have they done this for a while? How long have they been doing it?

ANNOUNCER : It’s also important to make sure the doctor has experience using BOTOX and a variety of fillers.

JOSEPH A. EVIATAR, MD, CHELSEA EYE & COSMETIC SURGERY ASSOCIATES : Just because a physician's been trained on one particular product and that's all they offer in their office, that may not be the right product for the patient.

ANNOUNCER : Don’t be afraid to ask to for references from other patients.

JOSEPH A. EVIATAR, MD, CHELSEA EYE & COSMETIC SURGERY ASSOCIATES : Any practice that does this should be able to refer you to at least one or two other patients who can say, "Okay, I had this treatment. This is what it felt like. This is how much it hurt."

ANNOUNCER : And experts caution against being tempted by a low price tag.

JOSEPH A. EVIATAR, MD, CHELSEA EYE & COSMETIC SURGERY ASSOCIATES : You want to make sure, first of all, that the product is actually the product. It's not some homemade variation of BOTOX and things like that. If it's too cheap, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

ANNOUNCER : Arming yourself with knowledge may just be your best weapon. Thanks for joining us on today’s Once Daily.
